Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthe house voted late Wednesday to pass a debt limit Bill negotiated by President Biden and house Speaker Kevin McCarthy after weeks of tense painstaking talks the legislation moved with overwhelming bipartisan support GOP Congressman Jeff Van Drew was the sole no vote from New Jersey's delegation he and other conservative members of the caucus railed against the deal for failing to secure even more spending cuts in the end it was a bipartisan group of Centrist members who delivered the win now lawmakers in the Senate are racing against the clock to pass the bill before June 5th that's when the government is forecast to run out of money to pay its bills so can they do it the same I'm joined by Congressman Josh gottheimer co-chair of the problem solvers caucus Congressman godheimer first of all thanks for joining me after what was undoubtedly a hectic day yesterday clearly a good night for bipartisanship given this era of hyperpolarization what role do you think the problem solvers caucus endorsement of this legislation played in getting the bill passed well for weeks and actually months we've been working with both sides to get everyone to the table and to make one thing clear for the sake of our country for our family's savings for their 401ks and and for for our veterans and law enforcement we could not the fault right that was not an option and we knew the only way we would actually get this done and across the Finish Line in the house would be if both sides came together right we we knew the far right was ultimately uh going to vote no so it was going to take a deal with Democrats and Republicans to say we're going to put the country first we're going to actually pay our bills which is all the debt ceilings about paying the country's bills and uh and that's what happened last night yeah okay so on that note uh your colleague Jeff Van Drew Republican only New Jersey Congressional member to vote no but even folks like Congressman Pasquale who did vote for the bill called this a manufactured Republican crisis what do you say to that did it need to come to these negotiations well I I think you should never we should never even have to have a fight over whether we're going to pay our bills or not which is what you know raising the debt ceiling is all about so you know my colleagues who said this whole thing is absurd and that we're stuck in this cycle of insanity meaning we have these fights that you don't need to have I think that's completely right right and the problem solvers caucus the the bipartisan group that I co-chair we saw that and we you know we believe that but at the end of the day we knew that it would take us all coming together Democrats and Republicans more from the middle to actually get it across the finish line and stop the problem um and uh and I'll tell you uh I feel good today that we did and that veterans are going to get what they need or or you know some of the proposals that the the far right had put up and passed out of the house the last couple weeks would have really hurt law enforcement and setback infrastructure and and um and hurt but those who are hungry and and to me that was unacceptable so I'm really glad that we all came together we got this done um and and now we got to get it out of the Senate and get this thing across the finish line to the president's desk yeah I mean clearly this is not over yet any one lawmaker in the Senate could hold this up um what are you hearing about how quickly we might see a vote go through there well I know they said they're going to try to get a vote as early as Friday night it could bleed into the weekend the problem is if any Senator tries to put up a change at all it then has to go back to the house representatives for us to pass it again so if there's any change to what we sent them last night it goes back to the house afterwards and that could really set us up against that deadline we know the deadline is June 5th right for defaulting as a country unacceptable you know what we did last night again as we said I think was good progress right it actually will help get it deals with permitting reform will help get infrastructure built faster which I think is key here in Jersey that's going to help our veterans it's going to make sure people who are hungry get fed who are working and so good progress but again if if the Senate makes any changes whatsoever to that bill it's got to come back to us and we don't have a lot of days left before June 5th yeah I mean are you fearful that that could happen and clearly you know this forced the president negotiate on items that he said he wouldn't so could that completely throw a wrench into this whole thing well you know when you have got both sides coming together everyone gets a lot of what they want put on everything as you know uh and I feel that's kind of what we voted on last night which is why we actually saw more Democrats than Republicans vote in on this package that President Biden and speaker McCarthy helped negotiate and put together um but yeah listen I'm I'm very concerned I spoke to some Republican Senators last night and some Democratic senators and there is a concern that they're going to try to put that the Republicans in particular are going to try to change the bill we sent to them and amend it and try to hold it up and and of course we just don't have time for that and and the idea that we would default and send our markets into disarray and to frankly our economy to disarray and our savings and our pensions and and give a huge win to the the one country that wants to see us fail right now and has been clear about that the government of China right they want to see us fail um you know to do that would be a huge mistake so we've got to put the country first here come together and get this done and the Senate you know there's no time for them to uh to mess around with this all right Congressman Josh godheimer thanks for joining us while you're out and about in the state there good to see you it's good to see you and remember last night was Common Sense over extremism so just everybody let's let's pray for some common sense in these last days ever the pragmatist Congressman Josh gottheimer thanks so much thanks thanks so much take care [Music]
