The measure, which passed unanimously in Assembly and Senate, awaits Murphy’s signature
A bill that would put mortgage payments and foreclosures for qualifying survivors of Tropical Storm Ida on hold for a year, now sits on Gov. Phil Murphy's desk after it unanimously passed in both the Assembly and Senate. The measure would give people some financial breathing space while they try to deal with homes still damaged by Ida, which hit on Sept. 1, 2021.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipit's been close to 3 years since hurricane Ida devastated parts of New Jersey leaving homes flooded and destroyed and families desperate for help and that desperation persists all these years later but help could be on the way lawmakers in Trenton sent a bill to the governor's desk that will offer mortgage payment for Barren for about 2,000 Ida survivors senior correspondent Brenda Flanigan spoke to Bill sponsors in Ida survivors about how this bill if signed will provide much needed relief almost three years ago airbats did Donuts in Lambertville flooded streets after Ida Dro more than 8 Ines of rain here sending Creeks on a rampage through the town wrecking businesses and many homes that hadn't flooded before I was standing in almost 4T of water in my own kitchen with the appliances plugged in Ida swamped Colleen Kane's home which remains uninhabitable but her family is still paying the mortgage 2,200 bucks a month on top of th000 a month for an apartment she's hoping Governor Murphy quickly signs a mortgage and foreclosure rescue bill for Ida survivors across New Jersey because they're desperate it would be lifechanging life freaking changing you know I'm sorry but I will do door Dash I will do instacart I will do anything I can to make sure I've got food on the table the bill offers relief to some 2,000 Ida Survivors by providing one year of mortgage and foreclosure forbearance for people people who got Federal disaster relief for damage Ida did to their homes who qualify with a household income that's less than 150% of median earnings for their zip code and who don't have significant savings or cash on hand no penalties or interest would acrew so they actually just started uh the Foreclosure proceedings for us so hopefully this will at least put a stop to it at this point because we weren't even sure what to do Stephanie hosg Goods living with family her home in Manville Lost Valley remains more than 50% destroyed by Ida but the area so flood prone Jersey DP no longer gives grants to elevate houses here it's offered 53 homeowners blue acres buyouts and that's what Stephanie eventually hopes to get she's also urging the governor to sign the bill soon I mean it just to have some time I guess to try and figure it out which hopefully now we finally can get because before it's just been fighting back and forth you know just trying to get through dayto day the governor's Deputy press secretary told us we cannot comment on pending legislation the bill passed both Senate and assembly unanimously sponsor Senator Troy Singleton says they coordinated with the front office to craft a compromise measure he hopes the governor will soon sign his team has has worked with us to better understand how the process with the mortgage forbearance will actually work and we believe we've created a template that talks about it and how it can work and I've taken input from so many different others intered parties as well uh Bankers Association mortgage companies just to better understand the process if Murphy issues a conditional veto Singleton says they'll strive for a fix and another vote later this summer he notes a similar Bill helped s Andy survivors for those still dealing with Ida like lyanna Jones it's unfathomable that Murphy would delay signing the bill so if he does know how critical this is and he's not signing it then I don't know that's that's just cruel she says every passing week without relief only compounds people's suffering I'm Brenda Flanagan NJ Spotlight News [Music]
