How far apart are the stars of Orion s Belt?
The sky is always moving, so astronomers need a way to measure distance in the sky -- and for that they use DEGREES.
LEMME SPLAIN.
Go outside and imagine you re standing sideways!
If you look at the horizon, that s ZERO -- then straight up is 90!
360 degrees of sky exist all around you!
This is how astronomers divide the sky.
If you stick out your arm, your pinky is about ONE degree three fingers is FIVE A fist is TEN And a Hawaiian Shaka is 25!
Let s try it.
Hit the skies at 9pm this week and look southwest.
You ll see Orion s belt stars are almost three degrees across.
From Betelgeuse in Orion you can hop to Procyon in Canis Minor with one 25-degree shaka, and then to Cancer with a 10 degree hand-width!
Easy!
Try out your new skills, and Keep Lookin up!
