Last July, Jersey City Councilwoman Amy DeGise hit a cyclist who had run a red light at an intersection in the city. She drove off and didn’t report the accident for another six hours, leading to many calls for her resignation. Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipin a rare interview with Jersey city councilwoman Amy De geese David Cruz got to ask the hard questions that many have been demanding de gea's answer in the wake of her hit and run accident last summer De Jesus slammed into a biker who'd run a red light she drove off and didn't report the accident for another six hours leading many in Jersey City to demand her resignation De Jesus refused even after being charged and pleading guilty to leaving the scene of an accident was fined five thousand dollars and lost her license for a year in her conversation with David on chat box last night she defended her decision to remain in office claiming she had no idea she hit anyone here's a portion of that conversation what happened hit a bad bump um or at least that's what it felt like at that time of the day the sun is kind of glaring into the windshield I felt like I had a Clear Vision but you know obviously with a little bit with the sun I had sunglasses on I hit what felt like a bad bump um and unfortunately instead of pulling over and assessing the full situation my mind had kind of defaulted to what would have been the most reasonable thing that just happened you hit a bottle you had a bad pothole and I continued on and went to work let's talk about the aftermath of this let's start with the CCTV video it looks terrible we should say just for the record that the cyclist was going into the in section against light he had the red light but when you go through that and you see um I mean you didn't stop didn't pump the brakes at all I mean it I have to say councilwoman it's hard to believe that you didn't see him but you're testimony is that you're saying here that you didn't see him but when you look at that and tell me what you thought when you first saw that video oh it's hard to watch it still is very hard to watch um it's two three seconds and it really makes you question you know what else do you not process correctly or dismiss what else do you miss I was and still am afraid driving I'm obviously not driving at this time but driving was very very triggering for me for a long time you saw it were you with your fiance at the time were you alone I believe I was with my fiance yes and I think my dad as well and what did you I wanted to throw up you know it and you know it's my mind I'm going like was that me um but it it didn't swerve didn't go to break like a natural thing and you know and I'm just it's really hard to reconstruct those moments right like and you go back and you say what did you do this morning and it's really easy to watch something and you know put pieces together but when you have to go back into your memories of of that day or of any day sometimes it's a little difficult to piece it together so my mind was piecing things together and I'm going like how you know I said the question that same thing like how you know did I not see that did and I at this point I remember they asked did I have the green light and I said I think I did you know and even something like that I'm going like I don't you know you don't sit down and record every moment you don't log every moment so seeing that too you know going like okay I have the green light I was you know on my way to work on a normal route that I would take a lot of people calling uh for you to resign demonstrations outside of City Council meetings you said you won't resign no why won't you just resign and and shut everybody up for lack of a better description you know obviously the outcry brought a lot of people to me you know people would reach out with with sensible conversation that you know I would engage in I felt like after having a conversation with someone who who took major issue with what happened and you know no longer you know wanted to trust me or see me as elected official after one conversation I felt like I was able to establish myself as someone who you know made a mistake can learn from it it will be forever ingrained in me but that my mission to make my home better is not changed it's not unwavered it's even just intensified it's gotten stronger the those who have chosen not to sit down with me despite being invited those who have chosen to you know maintain their position and and out of anger I feel like sometimes is motivated by you know not wanting to you know um you know it's politically motivated uh and it's not because they feel like I'm um a bad person and did a bad thing they didn't like me to begin with and they never will [Music]
