Interview: Knights' first-year head coach Tobin Anderson
The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is well underway. Only two men’s teams from New Jersey qualified for the Big Dance -- Princeton and Fairleigh Dickinson University. The FDU Knights are already being compared to Saint Peter’s Peacocks of Jersey City, who last year had a miracle run in the tournament. The Knights had a big win Wednesday night, when they beat Texas Southern by 84 points to 61.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell it's March Madness time the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is well underway so if you have not filled out your bracket yet sorry it's too late two Jersey men's teams qualified for the big dance Princeton and fdu but only one team is now being compared to last year's Miracle run by the Saint Peter's peacocks and that is teaneck's fairleigh Dickinson University especially after their stunning win last night topping favored Texas Southern by 23 points it's tonight's seventh time in the big dance but a first for Coach Tobi Anderson who is fired up and he joins me from the road coach Anderson congrats thank you so much I appreciate it you know you're coming down from a big win last night and as an underdog in this tournament what was that like it was incredible just a remarkable night for us obviously to to get a big win on a national stage National TV it's a great thing because on on a Wednesday night there's we're the only game playing at that time so the place was sold out you know packed house and and our guys played terrific so it was a great night for us for our school our program and our families and we definitely enjoyed it and March Madness motto is survive in advance so now we're we're playing again tomorrow night against a very good team so we're getting ready for Purdue work isn't done yet let's talk about let's talk about the team so first year as head coach at fdu you're coaching one of the youngest teams in the tournament and a fun fact fdu is also the shortest team and it seems yeah I love that it seems like you're using this to your advantage talk about it yeah so sometimes size is great but if you have speed and quickness that that works too so we we tend to play to our strengths we're quick and fast and tough and gritty and we try to do those kind of things and we can't make up for the fact that we're not very tall which is the way life is right now but our guys are New York New Jersey tough and they they love the competition and they play bigger their hearts are bigger than their actual Heights and so um they're a fun group of Coach they have a great chemistry they're very together and it's been a really special ride for us and a lot of fun I love it so we know that you're from a small town in the midwest but you're in Jersey baby now and you've made it and you made a name for yourself so tell me what it's been like to climb the ranks from D3 to D2 and now D1 that'd be a long book the shorter version all condensed into it's been quite a ride because you know you're in division division three and division two and you're in small gyms in front of very few people but I had I had great teams great coaches and I really loved every step of the way and now it's it's awesome because a chance to be on the big stage and last night to be on national TV and to play the in the biggest tournament the one of the biggest sporting events in all of sports the NCAA tournament is is probably within the Super Bowl and then it's the NCAA tournament the two biggest ones so for us to play in that last night for me personally have a chance to coach in that was a great accomplishment and we want to stay here it's like it's fun like we're gonna we're in a nice hotel we chartered a plane out here the food's gotten better all of a sudden we want to stay here as long as we can and we're treating this great so um it's been a good ride it's been a long ride and I've got a great family and my wife my wife and kids and you have to have a supportive family when you're a coach around you because it's a It's a Grind like it's a long season it's a long journey I'm lucky to have good people around me coach there have been a lot of comparisons between your team and St Peters how do you feel about that I mean listen we're I think very comparable as far as small schools from New Jersey uh very similar kind of kids like our guys are are liked in there they were undersized too um supposed to lose pick to lose not not seated very well um so yeah I mean I think it was great to see what they did last year to see them make that journey I think it gives a little bit of inspiration to teams like ours it can be done you know I mean most of the world will be picking Purdue tomorrow night and I understand that it's probably the smart thing to do but we have a puncher's chance there's a chance of you know if you're from New Jersey you know that people from Jersey are tough and and they don't mind to their competitive so we're we're not going to back down for Iowa now islands are tough too we're not going to back down for a challenge we're excited about it and go give it our best shot that's right jersey strong you know it Purdue University on Friday number one seed as you just heard Jersey is watching coach Anderson We are rooting for you I appreciate you Raven thanks for all your energy enthusiasm I appreciate it we'll go get it done good luck thank you
