Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwe begin at one of the latest hot spots for political slugfests and policy fights a school board meeting this one in Hanover Township where education leaders held an emergency session Monday night amid ongoing litigation with the State Attorney General's office over their parental notification policy the marathon meeting went late into the night as parents and Educators spoke out on both sides of the issue it comes just a week after the board appeared in court to defend their policy and are now removing it entirely while some say it diffuses what's become a contentious situation others see it as a quick fix to get out of the lawsuit senior correspondent Joanna Gagis has the story they basically decided that rather than try and come up with a transgender policy that passes legal muster they'd rather just have no transgender policy at all Michael gottisman referring to the Hanover School District that held a special meeting last night to undo do its recent policy that would require Educators to inform parents when a student came out to them that same policy that landed them in court with the Attorney General's office last night the school board voted unanimously to move to move the resolution to Second reading to basically just rescind um the 5756 transgender policy completely 5756 is the state's guidance for school districts when it comes to how they handle transgender students and issues Sean Hyland from New Jersey family policy Center applauds Hanover's decision we're greatly encouraged by that we've been saying for years that policy 5756 the transgender student guidelines or just guidelines does not mandate the law the law itself just gave the commissioner of Education the directive to make up the guidelines the guidelines themselves are simply guidance it's not mandated policy that must be implemented word for word in every single District Highland believes policies like this should be left to local control using local school board should have a policy where parents are notified and have that policy in place and teachers well informed of what their responsibilities are in informing parents but this Monmouth County parent who wants to stay Anonymous says if that had happened when his daughter first came out to her teachers it would have robbed him of a beautiful moment between a father and daughter that moment when she came out to me was empowering very empowering for me to know that my daughter had this much courage and felt de safe around me to tell me that coming out moment is huge I was just happy that it came from my daughter who we already knew was headed down this path you know it was just we had to hear it from her at that point he believes parents need to be the ones talking to their own kids especially if they think they may be lgbtq if you are a parent and you are accepting of your child you will know you will see the transition you're gonna know that your child is feeling a different way you know if if your child withholds information like this from you um I feel like that you as a parent should look deep on the inside and possibly find out why your child is withholding this information I don't think it's a school issue as for the Hanover School District the Attorney General said in a letter to the court that moving forward without a policy that doesn't violate the New Jersey law against discrimination would create a free-for-all he said the move is very telling and is a mere attempt to get out of the legal case we reached out to the Hanover district for comment but haven't yet heard back but Michael gottisman believes the goal here is to keep this case moving through the courts the goal is to run it through the New Jersey uh court system try to get it into the federal system and then bring it all the way up to the Supreme Court and frankly we all know that these days when you go to the Supreme Court you have no idea what type of decision you're going to get one thing that is clear this fight isn't going away anytime soon for NJ Spotlight News I'm Joanna Gagis
